It has been exactly 36 long, intense and grueling days……
In the 36 days since Stephon Clark was gunned down in the back yard of his grandparents, Tommy and Sequita Thompson, home, there has been a constant outcry from his mother Sequette Clark, his children (and their mother), his family and the community. This outcry is RAGE and it is in response to the historic and systemic racial bias and cultural disenfranchisement used by the Sacramento Police department and other local law enforcement agencies in Sacramento County. This OUTRAGE justifiably has been expressed in protest and tears and a lost sense of security. This outrage is the byproduct of what it truly means to be Black in America. This outrage is proof that there are two very different Amerikkkas with very different sets of rules. This outrage is why we must continue to fight....."It is our duty to fight for our freedom, it is our duty to win, we must love and support one another, we have nothing to lose but our chains." - Assata Shakur
On that fateful Sunday night, March 18th in the 9 0’clock hour folks in the Meadowview neighborhood were terrorized by a Sac Sheriff helicopter and eventually by Sac PD commandeering the streets surrounding Meadowview Road and 29th Street. By siege, the citizens were held hostage as the police department began to orchestrate the dance of who did it, why we were scarred and why Stephon deserved to die that night. It took over 24 hours for them to clear the block and the murder scene. Not the typical crime scene, in that Stephon and the occupants of his grandparents’ home were the victims of several crimes, including but not limited to – 1st degree murder, 2nd degree murder, manslaughter, reckless endangerment, willful disregard for life, neglect, poor judgement, negligent discharge of a firearm, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, poor skill set, poor training comprehension and terrorism.
Officers Jared Robinet and Terrence Mercadal didn’t treat the Thompson home with the same care and concern as the neighbor’s home, whose front door they knocked on before entering the backyard. Even with the overhead assistance of a sheriff helicopter there was still no excuse for the outcome. There was plenty of time and resources to not rush to judgment, time to retrieve non-lethal weaponry from the officer’s vehicles and time to wait for back up…..but they didn’t. At the end of the night, we, the community are left to pick of the pieces after what has become norm with respects to lazy policing in over policed neighborhoods that just so happen to be highly saturated with Black bodies.
If you are still making excuses for the police killings of unarmed human beings, specifically Black people, you are part of the PROBLEM, you are an accomplice, you are complicit and you need to stop that SHIT. In an anti-black world, too often what BLACK folks experience is discounted? The gaping wounds are long term existing trauma that lingers in the forefront of our collective memories. When victims come forward to speak on how they have been abused by law enforcement and other systems, believe that SHIT; no one wants to lie about being in pain and traumatized. This killing, this murder is yet another example of the dehumanization Black folks have historically felt in this country and throughout the world. Colonialism, slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, Christianity, English, racism, segregation, integration, redlining, gentrification, appropriation/misappropriation, white consumption, colorism, etc. are all tools of WHITE SUPREMACY & RACISM……and all of that has and continues to be the death of us. This reality has trickled into EVERY system that shapes how we all move and/or are constricted in this world; from but not limited to education, employment, housing, medical care, capitalism, culture, law enforcement encounters, and the criminal justice system.
Not only is Stephon’s family in mourning, but this community is mourning because what happened to Stephon has happened to so many other unarmed Black men in this country. This time we will expose the record of key individuals whose track records speak to the fact that they back the blue cloak of hypocrisy and are not here for Black people. Hence the reasons DA Anne Marie Schubert has to go. We cannot afford a DA who will NEVER indict a cop for murder. We cannot afford a DA whose pockets are lined with campaign contribution money from the very organizations who are supposed to protect and serve, but also want a DA who is going to give them a pass. "DA Schubert we don't want you. DA Schubert we don't need you."
We are only into the 4th month of 2018 and there have been 394 murders by cop thus far this year. At this rate by the end of 2018 cops are on target to murder approximately 1200 people in this country.....that's if we the people don't demand more from our elected officials by way of changes to laws and setting precedents that cops will be indicted, convicted and sentenced. California leads with 49 the most killed by cop, of which 16 were Black that we know of. (Killed By Police Data) We are beyond the point of asking why these things continue to happen. Put aside the idea that he may have been breaking into cars. Just know that if he were white and on meth in Roseville, he'd still be alive. The problem is the dichotomy of difference.....there is a rule book for Blacks and another one seemingly for er'body else. Blacks don't commit more crimes than anybody else, but they are treated with the most disregard, excessive force and murder by law enforcement. The systemic problem of RACISM rears its ugly head every time it goes down like this.
Read these words that express the outrage of the community…….the people are SMART
-Why do we always have to wait for officer’s names to be released?
-This MF said his hands were towards us and he fell. No MF he fell cuz your scary asses shot him up. Seems the second officer starts shooting because the first officer was shooting.
-He was already scared at the neighbor’s house which means he shouldn't be in this line of work.
-Chief Hahn better not try to justify this BS
Sac county DA I expect charges and action
No grand jury, we already know they tend to be in police pockets
Expect a diverse jury
-It's election time it's time for a new Sac County DA. Grateful for the Peacemakers and Hope Dealers that comforted and ministered to the Clark family and to our city tonight. Grateful for the righteous and courageous resistance and sacrifice displayed today. Shout out to Pastor Les Simmons, Tanya Faison, Ryan McClinton, Berry Accius, Richard Owen, Sonia Lewis, Rashid Sidqe, Be Love, Allegra Casimir-Taylor and many more. These folk put a lot on the line, they sacrifice a lot, please look out, support, check in, show love to them.

-Good Day Family. I really didn’t want to post this but Goddam! This is horrible. This was an execution. I am lost for words. My prayers for his family. I do not understand how another human can do this to another human. We are in a war. No amount of training can teach any human to have respect, compassion and care for other. Only dark hearted people continue to kill Black Folks like this. Stand, Continue to Stay on Your Post, Continue to fight and Resist. We cannot reform this system that was built on enslavement, genocide and the elimination of Black people. The whole thing has to go. The past will always be upon us. Some of you Negroes are truly cowards, coons or think it could never happen to you. We got a win from Stephan Clark Protest last night. It was a collective of community not individuals with one agenda, inconvenience those who think after the Murder of a Black Man by Police it will be business as usual. You had beefing hoods in one place on one accord. People understood their position and lane....Lastly the Golden 1 seats approximately 17,600. Trust me fam there wasn't close to 2000 people in that arena I seen it myself. Which means the Kings lost money in multiple ways. I do mean a lot of money....Which then lead to the owner making a statement which wasn't coming until we affected his business. This creates a domino effect. That will lead him to call some folks influential positions like wtf! The fact that ESPN aired it gives what we did a huge platform nationally......With all eyes looking at Sacramento, a change will come......So this power play was very necessary.....Most wouldn't understand the Art of War......Most can't understand the power of Protest....This is why we work. While others just stay in their comfort zone playing Keyboard Soulja. Remember we fighting for you because it can happen to anyone of us......#operationSaveSacramento #itsAcellPhonenotaGun #RestinPowerZoe We don't need congratulations about the way we EFFECTIVELY shut shit down last night. What we need is consistent momentum; we need everyone voting DA Schubert and Sheriff Scott Jones out of their offices. We need SACRAMENTO to be UNCOMFORTABLE about the MURDER of #Justice4StephonClark.
-This fight......this uphill battle has and continues to REQUIRE a dissection of policy and creation of community developed and centered policy. It will REQUIRE champions in positions of power to broker true accountability and transparency, minus protection for individuals who do wrong. Minus paid administrative leave. Minus pensions and continued benefits. MURDER by cop is worse than murder by citizen. Since there is a higher standard to individuals who hold guns for work every day; so should there be a greater threshold of punishment for those who ineffectively use their power against the people they are supposed to protect and serve. FYI.....if last night's show of SOLIDARITY is a representation of TRUE people power, let's do it over and over and over again. This city tries to divide our agendas, but if we pick a lane and stay focused on consistent work.....nobody can stop us or divide us when it's time to come together. The time is now for our work to cross paths. To all the BLACK folks in this town who AIN'T down with a protest in the streets, dont CRITICIZE, MOBILIZE.....WRITE LETTERS, SHOW UP AT CITY HALL, BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, VOTE, FLEX YOU DOLLAR, SUPPORT THIS CAUSE.
-Will Mayor Darrell Steinberg and all those other elected officials hold a vigil for Stephon Clark just like they did for Heather Heyer? Remember Charlottsville? You know, the one where all y’all stood outside City Hall, sang some kumbaya bullshit songs, held hands, lit candles, and brought ‘healing’ to the community?
-The Mayor said he looked at the videos “very carefully” and could not second guess the actions of the officers. Darrell, just say you hate Black people and go. Nobody has time for this shit.
-Our city is nationally trending and for the worst fucking reason. Disgraceful. Deplorable. I’m ashamed to live here.
-My thoughts and prayers go out to this young man's family. Now is the time for the city leaders to wake up and face what is really happening in our community. Yes, I'm so proud of the people of Sacramento because we're not remaining silent or tolerant to this Injustice!!!! To all the organizations pushing forward unapologetically, THANK YOU!!
-To all the Black folks complaining about being inconvenienced yesterday shame on you! Take a look at these beautiful boys who are now FATHERLESS! TAKE A STAND NOW!! Or next time it may be your son’s picture on the poster! It’s getting closer and closer to home.
-Black Lives Matter Utah would like to show solidarity and love to the Sacramento Chapter of Black Lives Matter who just shut down those streets and that game last night. Great job! We stand with you, because IF WE DON'T GET IT, SHUT IT DOWN, IF WE DON'T GET IT, SHUT IT DOWN, SHUT IT DOWN, SHUT IT DOWN, SHUT IT DOWN! NO JUSTICE NO PEACE, NO RACIST POLICE! INDICT CONVICT SEND THAT KILLER COP TO JAIL, THE WHOLE DAMN SYSTEM IS GUILTY AS HELL! #JUSTICEFORSTEPHON
-Listen, privileged non-Blacks, especially white people; you do not get to decide how Black people who are traumatized directly or vicariously should react. It is not your place. It is not your place to discuss if people deserved death for whatever postmortem criminal history. In fact, if that was the case, you are all culpable in the aiding and abetting ongoing violence against people of color. If you’re INCONVENIENCED OR UNCOMFORTABLE, imagine the horrors if you are separated from your loved ones because of being forcibly removed from their homes or murdered. People have lived with this their entire life. The outrage has actually been very much contained.
-It’s time YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE. IT HAS NOT BEEN NORMAL FOR THE OPPRESSED. YOU ARE THE TERRORISTS IF YOU CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THIS SYSTEM OF AGGRESSION AND OPPRESSION.
-LBI slowed down the video. Initially when the police turn the corner to the house to the back yard. Stephon clark turns and his cell phone lights up in his right hand next to his head. At that exact instance the cops yells "show me your hands gun.." seconds later.. "gun gun gun".. As if he felt the need to justify shooting his weapon.. 20 shots rang out.. They call to him as he's laying, dying to put his hands up, reload.. Request backup..When they should have called an ambulance. Sacramento Police Department??
-His hands were in the air. And he clearly had a cellphone. Hold these officers accountable. #stephonclark #blacklivesmatter #Kaepernick Dearest Sacramento Police Department,
-(typing in all caps so you know she's yelling) HOW IN THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO TRAIN MY SON TO THINK QUICKER THAN A FRIGHTENED SAC PD SWAT TEAM MEMBER? Should I send you my address and a description of my child so you don't murder him in my backyard? (Yelling again) WHO THE HELL CAN COMPLY WITHIN SIX SECONDS OF BEING MET BY SWAT, A HELICOPTER WITH HIGH BEAMS, AND FLASHLIGHTS IN YOUR FACE THAT WOULD PUT THE AVERAGE MAGLIGHT TO SHAME? (Stated illustratively) He was dead as soon as the APB went out for a "black male suspect between the age of work and 45." I'm sensitive about my young, Black son being shot in MY backyard because he OFTEN uses the back door to enter our house. I'm scared shitless, traumatized, tired, and reticent to hear folks explain why I should not be sensitive to this madness. Perhaps we could dig into the fact that the historical trauma of American slavery has had an epigenetic effect on the DNA of my people, and the slow action (failure) of #SacPD to DEMAND the use of non-lethal force is STILL killing our young, Black future.
Concerned citizen needing alternatives to YOU
-When someone gets murdered brutally by the Sacramento Police Department Over and over again everyone has something to say negative about the person who was killed like their life was less important than yours I see so much stupidity on the internet that it sickens me. We need to start protesting you ignorant ass people. We have been protesting but all you duds just fell to show up. My uncle was killed by Sacramento police back in 2016, none of you people showed up to the marches or to the countless media coverages cause let me guess you didn’t want to be seen on the news. Like someone’s really looking for you. Everybody has something to say but as soon as a March or a press conference was held no one showed up. You don’t know how hard it is for me and my family to live here in Sacramento after my Uncle Joseph Mann was gunned down shot at 18 times by the police and hit 16 times. Now you’ll understand how this family feels right now. We had laws passed where the footage has to be released within 30 days and that officers have to wear body cams. So until you go through something like this please just keep your opinions to yourselves cause you truly have no idea what you’re talking about, your just talking. My uncle’s body was held for 30 days, we couldn’t even identify him. Believe me, you have no idea what this family is going through or any family that has been through this. With my uncle being the most high profile case in Sacramento every time there is a shooting we have to relive our tragedy over again. So yeah, we haven’t made it to every protest because for us it’s more than just going out protesting it breaks you down all over again. I received a call this Morning from my oldest child who just wants to put it in the back of her mind, but we can’t cause it happens over and over again. Every time we see another black man taking away for nothing by the Sacramento Police Department...........#josephmann #Stephonclark and all the rest of our black soldiers taken away by Sac PD. We need all congregations to say #StephonClark name this weekend in your teaching, hold space and a prayer for victims of police violence and commit to 1 action you can do next week (sign a petition, register to vote, protest, mentor a kid). #PreachPrayAct #LIVEFREESabbath #BringTheHEAT When folks say we should do economic protests, well here’s an empty arena and we stopped thousands of dollars making sure they remember #StephonClark. Murder our Kings; you don’t get to watch your KINGS! #ShutItDown #LIVEFREE #BlackLivesMatter #BringTheHEAT Executing us with no due process and then telling us to exercise restraint is psychological terror! Point blank. Period! #StephonClark
This is just a glimpse at how the community feels when one of our community members are gunned down by the very people who are supposed to protect and serve.
Cops…..the very people who have an advantage with all of their weaponry.
Cops…..the very people who were ordered and supposedly trained in de-escalation practices.
Cops…..the very people who had the assistance of a helicopter with a bright ass light.
Cops…..the very people who could have waited for back up
Cops…..the very people if they have an inkling of fear, should have never signed up to be a cop.
So we organize and intentionally target those in positions of power in an effort to force them to do their jobs. DA Anne Marie Schubert is responsible for indicting and convicting criminals. City Manager Howard Chan has the power to fire Officers Robinet and Mercadal. Chief Daniel Hahn must set a precedent that the culture of policing changes TODAY. Mayor Darrell Steinberg and the rest of the City Council members must no longer straddle the fence and actually work for the people who put them in office. We have to pursue legislation like AB931 and SB1421, as well as lobby the folks at the state capitol. Governor Jerry Brown has to write the wrongs of departments in this state. We can be the catalyst for change, if we ALL dig deep. We have to require them to dig deep.
So the #CallThemUpChallenge is on.....let these local officials know that you are asserting your power as a community constituent and you need for them to rescind their support for DA Anne Marie Schubert. Let them know that their time in their elected positions are in jeopardy if they don't side with the people. Let them know we will not forget and that they too are being held to a high standard of ACCOUNTABILITY and TRANSPARENCY. Call them up and tell them what you want, and what you want is CHANGE!!!
The murder of Stephon Clark will not be swept under the proverbial rug of he was a thug or he was committing a crime or that the cops feared for their lives. We will not do that today. For the sake of those we have fought for before Stephon, we owe it to them to not let this town do him that way. So we echo their names of…..
They did not die in vain and they will welcome Stephon with open arms as they all have court-side seats to watch how EVERYONE in this town, state and country moves on the topic of State Sanctioned Violence by police on Black people and the Black community. We are calling upon everyone to be present and accounted for in making sure change comes in #MyLifetime. We can make history here in California, if we all work together. This is a National epidemic and this epidemic deserves not just attention but solutions that require all of us doing everything possible to make sure crimes are punished especially when cops commit them.
